Even before a webmaster has made his website he must answer that for which search engine he is making his site. Or in other words which search engine will bring more targeted audience to the site. While reading a website the crawler collects the information about the website and returns it to main data base of google, yahoo etc. This whole process of a software crawling, collecting formation and storing the info into a data base is called “indexing”. Indexing helps in easy retrieval of ‘relevant search results’ are pulled out and displayed as search engine results.
2. Human-powered engines: These search engines rely on manual submission of web sites before they index the site. Unlike crawler based engines, these search engines do not use automated software (crawlers0 for automatic indexing. These types of search engines are often called as web directories in common language. Yahoo directories and Mahol.com are one good example of this type of search engine.
3. Hybrid engine: As the name suggest, a hybrid search engine is a combination of crawler and manual submission type of search engines. Here people can either manually submit their web sites for indexing or else web crawler will eventually crawl the site and index it.
It is crucial for a webmaster to know about types of above search engines because how it will clearly decide that when the site will be indexed. An automated search engine like google and yahoo will probably index a site much earlier than a hybrid and manual powered search engines.
